USB-C cables: buy the right power and data rating

Two cables with the same USB-C connector can have different charging and data capabilities. Pick the job first: charging a phone, powering a laptop, transferring files or connecting a display. Then compare a cable with an explicit rating for that job.

Choose the setup that fits your use

For everyday charging

60W USB C to USB C cable 1m

A clearly rated charging cable may be enough for a compatible phone or lower-power laptop. Choose a length that reaches without pulling on the connector.

Check first: A charging-focused cable may offer only basic data transfer. Check the stated data rate separately.

For a higher-power laptop

240W USB C to USB C cable

Consider a higher power rating when your laptop and charger need it. Verify that the cable manufacturer explicitly states the supported charging specification.

Check first: A larger power rating does not automatically add fast data transfer or display support.

For an external drive

USB C 10Gbps data cable

Match the cable’s stated data rate to the drive and computer port. A short, appropriately rated cable is a more useful upgrade than a decorative braided finish.

Check first: The slowest component still limits the connection. Confirm the connector at each end before buying.

Separate power from data

Compare the published power rating and data rate as two independent specifications. Check display compatibility separately if you need video. The USB-IF explains cable markings for power and performance; a product title that says only “fast” is not enough.

Check length and pack quantity

Compare the same length and number of cables. A two-pack is good value only when both cables are useful. For a desk, measure the route around the furniture before choosing a longer cable.

Replace the correct part

If charging is unreliable, check the device maker’s troubleshooting guidance before replacing both the cable and adapter. Keep the packaging until you have tested the cable with your own equipment.
