Refurbished laptop deals: check the processor, Windows support and battery
A listing headed 'Core i5, Windows 11, SSD' leaves several important questions unanswered. Processor generation, exact configuration and battery condition can change what a refurbished laptop is worth. Compare those details before letting a high original price make an older machine look like a bargain.

Ask for the exact machine and selected configuration
Record the manufacturer model, full processor name, memory, storage, screen resolution and keyboard layout. On a listing with dropdown choices, select the configuration first and recheck the price. A starting price for low memory or no storage is not the cost of the laptop you intend to use.
Then make a practical minimum specification for your applications. Check their published requirements and any ports you need for a monitor or peripherals. Treat a newer processor with less memory as a different option rather than assuming the 'i5' or 'i7' badge alone ranks the offers. If the seller cannot identify the processor, you cannot complete the compatibility check.
Installed Windows 11 is not the whole support check
Microsoft's Windows 11 requirements include a compatible processor, TPM 2.0 and UEFI firmware with Secure Boot capability. Microsoft recommends its PC Health Check tool for eligibility checks. Ask the seller whether the exact device meets Microsoft's supported requirements, rather than accepting only a screenshot showing Windows 11 installed.
Standard Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025. Microsoft's current support page describes Extended Security Updates separately; they do not turn an older machine into Windows 11-compatible hardware. If an offer relies on another operating system or an extended-update arrangement, check that plan's current terms and your applications before treating it as ready for your work.

A cosmetic grade does not answer battery questions
Ask for battery-health information or the seller's stated minimum battery standard, plus its testing method. Keep that separate from scratches and screen marks. For a laptop you mostly plug in, battery wear may be an acceptable trade-off. For commuting, an unspecified battery could undermine the reason for buying a portable machine.
Check that the correct charger is included and ask whether the device has any firmware password, activation or organisation-management restriction. Request confirmation that it is ready for your own account and normal updates. Preserve the answers with the listing. A seller's general 'fully tested' statement is less useful than a clear answer about the specific concern.
Compare a ready-to-use total
Illustrative offers, not live listings: Laptop A is £220 delivered with the charger and an acceptable stated battery standard. Laptop B is £190 plus £8 delivery and needs a confirmed £30 charger, making £228 before any battery question is resolved. A saves £8 for the usable setup. Do not add a hypothetical battery replacement unless the evidence shows you need one and a suitable part is available.
Finally read the guarantee, return cost and seller identity. eBay's Refurbished programme has its own minimum seller-guarantee requirements for eligible mainland UK deliveries; ordinary used listings should not inherit those terms. Match condition and specification before comparing with a new machine, and leave unresolved support or battery information beside the price.
